King Herrera retains Steeplechase crown

Rene Herrera retained his SEA Games steeplechase crown last 12/14/09  held at Vientiane, Laos.  It’s actually the 4th straight title by Herrera, winning said event also in ’03, ’05, and ’07 editions of SEA Games.

Herrera was never seriously challenged during the 2009 SEA Games steeplechase finals

This brings him closer to the record of legend Hector Begeo’s record of 6 SEA Games steeplechase titles (’83, ’85, ’87, ’91, ’95, ’97).

2009 was another successful year for the 30 year old native of Guimaras as he  won the 3,000m steeplechase gold and 1,500m silver at the Philippine National Open last May and the steeplechase bronze at the Taipei National Open

Tougher challenge awaits Rene next year as the Asian Games looms.  Even the great Hector Begeo could only muster a bronze medal  at the steeplechase in 1982 Asian Games held at New Delhi.

Incidentally, the last Filipino male Asian Games track medal was brought home by Isidro del Prado at the 400m last 1986 at the Seoul Asian Games.

I am sure Rene is aiming to break this drought for our country!

Go King Rene!
