Asiad Trivia: When did Israel participated in the Asian Games?


Answer: Israel sent delegations to the Asian Games in 1954, 1958, 1966, 1970 and 1974.  They did not send any delegations to the Asiad in 1962 and 1978 due to Arab pressure on the hosts.

They won a total 53 medals in those 5 Asiads.  Below are the breakdown of Israel’s Asian Games medals:

The most be-medalled Israeli athlete is Esther Rot-Shahamorov who won the 100m hurdles and Pentathlon in the 1970 Games, and the 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles in the 1974 Games.  In addition, she had a silver medal in the 1970 long jump, for a total of 5 golds and 1 silver personal medal haul.

In 1981, Israel were excluded from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) for political reasons.  Currently, Israel is a member of the European Olympic Committee and participates in that continent’s sports tournaments.
