Quick Trivia: Rene the 2nd

Rene Herrera was only the 2nd Filipino to ever compete in the Olympic men’s 5000m run.

The first one was no other than the incumbent Secretary General of PATAFA – Benjamin Silva Netto.  He participated in the 1968 Mexico Olympics where he clocked 17:10.2 to place 13th out of 14 entries in his heat.

His heat was won by Kenyan Naftali Temu who clocked 14:20.4.  He later won the bronze medal in the finals behind Mohammed Gammoudi (Tunisia) and Kipchoge Keino (Kenya).

    Ben Silva Netto looks good, like he can still break 3 hours for the marathon. He was my coach at Ateneo in the 70s. He is good people….
