On the brink

Atienza (017) won all seven events of the 2012 PNG Heptathlon, enroute to her SB 5,208 pts

During the recent Philippine National Games (PNG) held at Dumaguete, National Heptathlete  mainstay, Narcisa Atienza tallied 5,208 pts.  Just seventy seven (77) points behind her all-time best of 5,285 pts, which was done in last year’s 2011 SEA Games.

With the 2012 season still midway though, Nars is now on the brink of improving on her PB, and possibly have a legitimate shot at  Elma Muros-Posadas’ 11 year old record of 5,346 pts.

Nars’ PB of 5,285 pts is just 61 points behind Elma’s national record.

Elma and Narcisa have completely different set of strong events.  The  former is strong in long jump and the sprints and runs (100m hurdles, 200m and 800m), while the latter is strong in the throws (shotput, javelin) and high jump.

Below is the comparison of the two ladies’ tally of points per event:

Hepta Events
Elma Muros 1998 Narcisa Atienza 2011
100m hurdles 14.06s 15.56s
High Jump 1.53m 1.75m
Shotput 10.87m 12.15m
200m 24.52s 26.41s
Long Jump 6.25m 5.73m
Javelin Throw 32.94m 43.17m
800m 2:26.00 2:31.72
Total points 5,346 pts 5,285 pts

Nars has two  options on how to attack Elma’s record.

First is to improve on her “weak” events.  Granting that she maintains her 110m hurdles, high jump, shotput and javelin performances above, and

1. Improve on her 200m by registering 26.00s, that’s additional 31 points from her 2011 performance;

2. Improve on her long jump by leaping 6.00m, that’s additional 58 points from her performance;

3. Improve on her 800m, by running 2:26.00, thats additional 79 points.

That’s an improvement of 168 pts versus the current mark.

Total points 5,346 pts 5,285 pts 168

Atienza (lane 4), has won 2 silvers and 1 bronze medal at the Heptathlon in the last 3 SEA Games

Second is to improve further on her strong events.  Granting that she maintains her performance in the 100m hurdles, 200m, long jump and 800m above, and

4. Improve on her high jump by leaping 1.80m (after allm she owns the NR at 1.81m), that’s additional 50 points,

5. Improve on her Shotput by throwing 13.00m, thats an additional 51 points,

6. Improve on her Javelin Throw by heaving it to 45.00m, that’s and additional 33 points.

Option 2 is a total of 134 points.

Nars, 32, only has this year and next year as her window to shatter Elma’s record as father time is fast catching up with her skills.  So I think its more realistic if she will concentrate on her strong events to wipe out the 61 points lead of Elma.

With the right conditions and form in next year’s SEA Games, we will witness a new NR for heptathlon.
