At the end of the day a renewed UPHR won its first title in several decades. The feats of sprinters Archand Christian Bagsit and distance runner Mervin Guarte of SSC captured the imagination of the crowd over the 4 days the NCAA was held at Manila and Pasig.

After a successive season of performances Letran’s Archand Christian Bagsit claimed the sprint double winning in season leading times 21.4 in the 200m and 48.4 in the 400m. The 20 year old who won his first senior national title last year over 400m is now prepping for the Thailand National Open. In the 100m Bagsit had finished runner up to 18 year old Rookie Daniel Noval of CSB who won the 100m in 10.8 into a stiff -2.1 head wind.

Mervin Guarte of San Sebastian College continued to improve with a 1.52.0 in the 800m, the second fastest time ever by a junior (1.50.04 is the national junior record, Guarte 92 last year as a junior). Guarte had a very close battle with JRU’s Roldan Verano with Guarte winning the 1500 and steeples and Verano taking victory in the 5 and 10k. Pre race favourite Justin Tabunda of SSC who ran excellently during the road racing season faded to bronze in the longer distances.

In the field events Nino Espinosa of Mapua could not match the 7.03m he jumped at CHED but his 6.88m was enough to win over the Diones brothers from JRU. In the Triple Jump Harry Diones won with a 14.49m jump, with brother Melbert 2nd and Espinosa 3rd. In the Javelin
