Perhaps it is time for a rookie from Ateneo to step up. Al Gerion Bugarin who has a best throw 12.81m (Uni Games Dumaguete, 2010), will be looking to continue the proud legacy of Ateneo’s dominance in this event Arnel Ferrera, Ryan Dalman and Christopher Dominque Hey all champions in this event.
The man who won the first medal for the Philippine Contingent (A bronze) at the ASEAN Uni Games in Chiangmai, Thailand last month is the one to watch. Joel Santa Mina of FEU the defending UAAP Champion (threw 39.98 last UAAP) will be challenged by Angelo Arayata of ADMU 38.96m, and Ernie Sabiduria of UST 38.22m. Perhaps a dark horse in this event is Miguel Sibayan of ADMU who threw 38.12m as a junior in 2009.
If he is not graduating Karl Christian Fransico of UP will be the one to watch already the champion for the past few years, he has established himself also as #2 in the Philippines behind SEA Games Champion Arnel Ferrera. He would be untouchable at these games with a PB of 50.50m, none of his opponents are throwing over 40m!
UST rookie 17 year old Rizal Kasim the Uni Games Champion (54.11m) will start as the favourite in this event the only thrower in the field who has gone above 52m.
Another Atenean thrower starts favourite in this event. Micah Sibayan the Uni Games Champion (10.19m) the only thrower in the womens shotput over 10m.
Sibayan however with a PB of 34.16 from 2009, will have alot of work to do to catch favourite Kenneth Grace Ferrera (Arnel’s younger sister) 35.97m and her team mate Mary Jane Miano (33.94m) of FEU. With DLSU rookie and National Junior Record Holder Twinkle Masilang (32.70m) in a close battle for the bronze and also Ira Mae Hernaez of UE (32.68m in 2009).
Kenneth Grace starts as favourite in this event with a PB of 38.06m (2009), Mary Rose Lontajo 35.79m of UP is expected to be her closest challenger.
National Junior Champion Jennefer Penepona of FEU (38.16m) starts as favourite, with team mate Ferrera (35.97m) and ADMU Sibayan (35.41m) fighting it out for the silver.
