A team of 25 University Athletes has been selected to represent the Philippines at the 2010 ASEAN University Games which will be held from December 17 – 23 at Chiang Mai in Thailand. 10 Men and 15 Women from UAAP schools will be up against top athletes from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Timor Leste.
The last meet held in 2008, which boasted an even larger contingent was one of the most successful development outings/exposure for upcoming Filipino Track and Field athletes ever!
One question i posed was Why only UAAP athletes, obviously talents from NCAA, provinces and in particular the University of Cebu (Lindley Navaja and Ernesto Ybanez) and Vilamilgrosa (Junelle Gallebo and Blescie Mae Sanchez) should have been included. However this meet is not being funded by the PSC or PATAFA. The UAAP Foundation is footing the bill, therefore its only fair that athletes that represent the UAAP, be selected as this is in fact a UAAP Project/Activity.
Also some athletes such as Patrick Unso who are incoming freshmen have not been included in the lineup.
The best chance of these athletes is Serenata Saluan of UST who is solely focusing on the 800m and 1500m. With less events Serenata should easily be able to crack the 2m07 Philippine Record in the 800m.
In the Mens division FEU’s Jesson Ramil Cid who broke the junior record of the legendary Dario de Rosas (now the coach of Brunei Track and Field), in the Decathlon will be a hot favourite for a medal or perhaps even the gold.
Coaches coming along with them are Mick Perez (ADMU), Art Fronda (UE), Rosito Andaya (FEU), and Ming Liu (UST).
Wish them the best and keep them in your prayers.
